For Patients
Find out what to expect when your GP or specialist refers you to us.
To access our full range of services, including our specialist pain physicians, you’ll need a referral from your GP or specialist.
A referral from your GP ensures coordinated care and may make you eligible for Medicare rebates.
The easiest way to get a referral is to tell your GP or specialist your symptoms, explain that you want multidisciplinary care, and share this website with them.
You can also book our allied health services without a referral and pay for them privately.
Here’s an overview of what you can expect from your pain management team.
We work with you and your GP to identify the root cause of your pain.
That includes screening for any underlying conditions that could be making your pain worse.
Together, we develop a personalised plan to manage your pain.
Your care plan can include everything from nutrition and mental wellbeing support to surgery and medication.
Our specialists and allied health practitioners help you and your GP put your plan into place.
We’ll review and adjust your supports based on your progress.
You can book an appointment by calling (07) 5620 1234, emailing admin@managingpain.clinic, or submitting an appointment booking form.
If you have a referral, please attach a copy to your email or form submission.
Here’s what you’ll need for your first appointment.
If you share your current healthcare providers’ details and give us your consent, we can get your information from them directly.

Legend:
Before your initial consultation, we’ll reach out to you to go through your medical history and the reason you’ve been referred to us.
We’ll then book in your consultation, which will run for up to 60 minutes.
During that time, one of our specialist pain physicians will ask you questions about your pain, your medical history, and the care you’ve received so far.
They might also perform physical examinations and tests, like checking your sensitivity to touch or your range of motion.
When your specialist asks questions, provide clear, accurate, and detailed responses.
Bring any relevant medical documents, test results, and imaging reports, as well as written questions, notes about your pain, or a symptom diary to guide the discussion.
Consider having a family member or friend with you for support and to help write down key information.
During the consultation, be honest about your goals, concerns, and the impact of pain on your life.
At the end of your appointment, your specialist will outline your recommended next steps and discuss any follow-up or treatment options.
Please note that any fees must be paid on the day of your appointment.
If you’ve been referred, some or all of your fees may be covered by Medicare.
If you have private health cover, your fund may cover some or all of your fees.
Use your credit or debit card to pay any gaps.
If you need to change or cancel your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible. Cancelling or changing your appointment within 24 hours of your appointment may result in a fee.
A referral from a GP is valid for 12 months. A referral from a specialist is valid for 3 months. If your referral has expired, your visit won’t be covered by Medicare.
Our clinic is fully wheelchair-accessible. You or your driver can park in the on-site carpark, then travel directly from your car to our waiting room.
Please let us know in advance if you’d like an interpretation service so we arrange an over-the-phone services. (We’ll let you know if there are extra costs.)
You’re also more than welcome to bring an in-person or virtual interpreter to your appointment.
If you have private health cover, talk to your insurer before you book an appointment. They can tell you exactly what services and procedures are covered by your policy. Our multidisciplinary approach to care means you could be supported by a specialist pain physician, a dietitian, a psychologist, and/or a physiotherapist.
Everyone’s care plans are different. If your plan includes a recommendation for a medical procedure, one of our specialist pain physicians will conduct it at our clinic, John Flynn Private Hospital, Gold Coast Private Hospital, or Tweed Day Surgery.
You’re welcome to bring another person to your appointment. That could be a partner, a family member, a friend, a support worker, or an interpreter.
To maintain our quality of care, we ask that you only bring one other person into your consultation. If you have other people with you, we’ll ask them to stay in the waiting room until you’re finished.
